These books serve the overall general purpose of covering all essential topics every Social Worker must know in the Master level. These books also contain topics in great detail all of which is been said important areas in testing in ASWB handbook 2013 for Masters level testing.
You don't have to mug up everything, but reading them when you get exhausted with trying to do practice questions or using them in between preparatory sessions or to take notes help to refresh facts and improve knowledge which will help in answering a question.
You can try reading few topics a day, or read when finishing specific topics or use as general reference material.
Some of them are available online free through pdf files and open library system and others must be available in the local library, some of them however has to be brought second hand from amazon, like i did for few. The list of important books include :

- Development through Life by BM Newman (avail in openlib) - however not very important reference material .
- Contemporary Human Behavior Theory by Susan p Robins (available in open library)
- Encyclopedia of Social Work (older editions available at openlibrary.org)
- Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy by Yalom (available in openlibrary)
- Understanding the generalist Practice (available online)
- Skills of helping individuals , families and groups, by shulman (available online)
These books are recommended by ASWB in preparation for test covering most of the test topics. This itself gives an indepth knowledge on facts necessary to answer the questions in the exam. However the logical derivation of these factual knowledge is based on ethics, which is very important and whose notes available in NASW website.
