symptoms such as weight loss, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, or feelings of worthlessness.  The question asks what is MOST likely to the the client’s diagnosis and, therefore, Dysthymic Disorder (Answer A) is the best answer.  The client does not report any symptoms of Manic or Mixed Episode, e.g., elevated mood and, therefore, Bipolar Disorder (Answer B) is not the correct answer.

(2).      D.         During an initial visit, building rapport and empathizing with the client is essential to developing a relationship with the client.  Answers A and B are inappropriate as they dismiss the client’s feelings and do not foster a trusting relationship.  Answer C may be appropriate in the future, but is premature at this time.  Accordingly, Answer D is the correct answer.

(8)        C.        Social workers are mandated reporters.  Social Workers are required and responsible for reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.  These types of situations are generally difficult to assess and are highly subjective.  Answer A, Ignore it, simply “smells bad” and should be eliminated.  If an answer does not pass the “sniff test,” the answer should also be eliminated.  So, by the process of elimination, Answer C is the correct answer.

(10)      D.        Whenever a client presents reporting any medical symptoms, particularly symptoms that are potentially serious, the Social Worker should FIRST refer the client to her/his medical physician.  Answers A and B might be appropriate, but at a later time.  Answer C, Obtain Informed Consent, should already have taken place.  Accordingly, Answer D is the correct answer.

(11)      D.        An individual is vulnerable to relapse for substance abuse during the first year of remission.  This is a recall question.  You may or may not have known this fact.  Do not be surprised if you see issues covered on the Exam that you have not heard of or do not know.  Do not panic.  Use the process of elimination and your best judgment.

(12)      D.        The Social Worker should continue therapy with the husband, even if the therapist specializes in work with couples.  The husband has just suffered a huge loss in his life.  Terminating with the client would only contribute to that sense of loss.  If the Social Worker feels that the husband my benefit from a bereavement group or bereavement counseling, the Social Worker may recommend that the husband seek such supplemental counseling at the same time.

(13)      C.        Reporting this to the authorities will trigger the appropriate intervention, which likely will include having the child removed from the home.  The Social Worker, as a mandated reporter, is required to report suspected sexual abuse to the authorities.  Remember, when a child is involved, safety of the child is always the priority.

(19)     A.         The Supervisor should suggest that the Social Worker see a therapist to work out her issues so that her issues do not interfere with her client’s interests and needs.  Answer B and D do not address the problem.  Nothing in the question suggests that the Social Worker’s caseload is an issue or that she is unable to work.  Answer C would be inappropriate given the Supervisor-Supervisee relationship.

(20)      D.        The best thing for a Social Worker to do is refer the client to a public agency.  The Social Worker in this scenario knows that the client is in need of long-term treatment.  Answers A and C would not provide the client with continuity of treatment, and changing therapists or course of treatment can slow down, reverse, or halt any progress made during the 10 initial sessions.

(21)      A.        The Social Worker should have the child removed from the home.  When it comes to children, their safety is always the priority.

(22)       A.       The Code of Ethics states that Social Workers should set fees that are reasonable and should take the client’s ability to pay into consideration when setting fees.  In this situation, the client has been seeing this Social Worker for a significant period of time.  The Social Worker, in efforts to achieve continuity of treatment, should arrange for alternate methods of payment.

(33)     B.         The FIRST thing that the Social Worker should do is assess the situation.  The other choices may be appropriate down the road, but not until an initial assessment is made to determine the seriousness of the situation.
